Driving into the unknown

“I don’t wanna grow up I’m a toys-r-us kid”   We all remember it. So why is it we think that we have to stop playing just because we grow up? As kids, we didn’t need much to feel alive. Most days we spent outside using sticks as swords, playing hide and seek or tag. We could be found dancing in our bedroom using a hairbrush as a microphone or dressing up as princesses. Laughing till we cried was the norm. Somewhere along the way, our imagination turned to routines, efficiency and productivity and the laugh was suppressed by the seriousness of everyday life.

But here’s the thing, our inner child never disappeared. It’s waiting patiently for us to reclaim it. Why does it matter if we play or not? First…it’s a great stress reliever. It gives your brain a rest from the constant to do list. How can you not enjoy a great game of charades to get you laughing? Secondly…it stimulates your creativity. When was the last tine you walked through a craft store and said, I can do that. Your imagination can go wild with ideas. Third…You can build connections with others who enjoy the same thing as you. Creating relationships at this age is difficult. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of people but if you are consciously engaging with others who have the same interest it makes it easier. Lastly and probably most importantly…don’t take life to serious. Life is to short to worry about what others think. Laugh at the stupid, cry while watching that sad movie and laugh at yourself. Try something new and if you fail, who really cares. Dance like no one is watching and sing to that old song off-key and all. Reconnect with the old you that used to live, laugh and love with no agenda.

Play isn’t something we grow out of; it’s something that we grow into when we remember its value. Life doesn’t have to be all work and no play. Especially as we age. The world is going to keep spinning but you will feel lighter and more alive and free. Today I challenge each of you to go play. Find something that will put a smile on you’re face and some pep in your step.
